We Teach Techniques That Are Proven To Work!
At our Martial Arts Schools in Dutchess and Orange County, we teach martial arts techniques that are tested by Military, Law Enforcement and in MMA competition to be the most effective against TRAINED OPPONENTS. If they work against UFC Fighters, they’ll work even better against average people; that is why the arts that we teach are the ones that most military and Law Enforcement agencies have adopted and use practically in real Self Defense situations. MMA Fighters GET PAID to win fights, so they choose the most effective fighting styles to train in. We teach Brazilian Jiu-jitsu because it is PROVEN to be the most effective single style of Martial Arts without cross training - this was established in the UFC when there were almost No Rules and No Time Limits! We also teach Muay Thai because it is the most well rounded and complete style of Kickboxing that incorporates Kicks, Punches, Knees, Elbows and Takedowns. These are the styles that THE BEST fighters in the world use to beat trained opponents; they are also the styles that a large majority of Law Enforcement agencies use to prepare for the worst Self Defense Situations.
It is important to be Well Rounded.
At NYMAG, we teach several styles of Martial Arts, but the core of our program is broken into two parts: Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. The reason for this is that for both Fighters and People practicing for Self Defense, the combination of these two arts makes for a well rounded student. In each area of fighting, these two style are the most well rounded: Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is the most complete style of Grappling and Muay Thai is a complete form of Stand-up fighting. Unlike most Kickboxing styles, Muay Thai has a complete array of techniques and Fighters can strike with just about every part of the body. Muay Thai is one of the only "Kickboxing" styles to fully address the Clinch position and even has takedowns. Unlike Wresting, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners can fight from both the top and from their backs and actually submit their opponents from this position (the guard).
Unfortunately, there are still many schools that do not balance their training to incorporate both Stand-Up Fighting and Ground Fighting. In recent years some Karate schools have added a Grappling or "Jiu-jitsu" program to their curriculum, but at NYMAG, we have been teaching Authentic Brazilian Jiu-jitsu since 1997 and are the Source for BJJ instruction in Hudson Valley.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is SO EFFECTIVEthat after seeing BJJ Practitioners DOMINATE the UFC vs other styles, The US Army decided to base almost their entire Combatives system on Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. The US ARMY COMBATIVES MANUAL was re-written for the modern world in 2002 by a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner. The US Army can't afford to risk lives on Hollywood Myths and "Dojo Theory"; they field test their techniques in the real world and use Brazilian Jiu-jitsu ... because it works in REAL situations!
Green Beret, Terry Schappert Talks about Training at NYMAG
"As a Green Beret, every skill that I train for the battlefield must prepare me to fight and win in the worst conditions. Martial arts training is no exception. What I learn must be practical, simple and effective - but it must be taught in a way that I can understand quickly and incorporate in my skill set.
Not every great fighter makes a great instructor, but the team of trainers at NYMAG are all skilled and accomplished in their disciplines, as well as very effective teachers.
Everyone is welcome to train here. The atmosphere is relaxed but intense. If you want to get in better shape more efficiently, train here; if you want to compete in Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai, train here. And if you need to learn how to defend yourself and your family in today's world, you BETTER come here, the instructors at NYMAG know that the disciplines they teach all come from a need to survive and win on any battlefield -- a dark alley, an MMA cage, or the unforgiving streets of the Middle East. When you train at NYMAG you will have fun, but you will be pushed. You will meet friends who will fight you with all they've got. You will get stronger, faster, tougher and develop skills that make you a better fighter and a better person. That's why I'm here - I don't have time for stuff that doesn't work, so I train at NYMAG -- and that's why you should be here too."

Learn what Experts and Professionals use. Field Tested & Effective.
Our Programs were chosen and developed at NYMAG by long time Martial Arts Experts who have cross-trained in almost every imaginable art extensively. Over the years, we've hosted many different styles of martial arts including Ninjitsu, Arnis, Jeet Kune Do, Aikido, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Krav Maga and more. We can speak intelligently from experience about what works in real self defense situations because we've trained in it; our knowledge comes from extensive experience, research and practice. If you look around our school, you will see more Corrections Officers, Police Officers and Military Personnel as both students and instructors at our school than any other school in the area teaching other styles; they are here because what we teach works on the street when it counts and they don't have the option of simply avoiding a confrontation.
Sometimes "not being there" is not an option. There are many schools and instructors out there that simply neglect certain techniques or whole areas of fighting because you "shouldn't be there". The truth is that sometimes you won't have a choice, whether it's because you are on the job or you are a civilian who got caught by surprise ... if it does happen, you should be prepared. Afraid of the Masked Gunman waiting for you in the Dark Alley?
Not every Self Defense situation happens in a dark alley against a masked gunman.
Consider the following statistics from the US Department of Justice:
Victims knew their offenders in about 5 in 10 violent crimes against men and 7 in 10 violent crimes against women.
In 2008 females experienced about 552,000 nonfatal violent victimizations (rape/sexual assault, robbery, or aggravated or simple assault) by an intimate partner (a current or former spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend).
50% of attacks against Males and 70% of attacks against Females are by someone they know who is not wielding a gun in a dark alley. This statistical fact will make it impossible for you to simply avoid most situations, not be there or "defend and flee". You will also be less likely to employ deadly techniques or weapons against someone with whom you have an emotional connection or previous friendship. It may not be a life threatening situation that warrants a response that may maim or kill someone you know personally. Your attacker will most likely not come from a place you can avoid and will probably already have you in a disadvantageous position. This is why arts like Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that teach safe restraining techniques are proven to be highly effective in real Self Defense situations. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is also the ONLY Martial Art that teaches women to effectively defend themselves while on the ground and on their back.
In most Physical Altercations and Self Defense situations it will be more appropriate for you restrain someone or know how to control them - this includes very common everyday occurrences like breaking up a fight or restraining someone you may know in order to stop them from hurting you or a loved one without causing them unnecessary harm.
Don't let Fear stop you from learning Real Self Defense
Some schools use scare tactics such as presenting you with the least likely worst case scenario in order to distract you from the most common Self Defense situations and steer you away from Styles that work. Why? It takes twice as long to earn a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as it does in the average Karate School. The practice of MMA or Brazilian Jiu-jitsu involves performing real techniques against trained partners who are resisting and not cooperating as you see in most Self Defense "Demonstrations"; this reality is often harmful to the egos of most "Masters" who have never had their skills put to the test.
Acquiring the skill to teach real martial arts isn't easy. But here's the good news: learning real self defense is.
We train our students through drilling and fun practice in order to develop our reflex response and emotional control. We make training fun through practicing as a sport - in this way, you will react in a non-emotional way when it counts and be more likely to train more often while getting in shape in the process. Think of it like catching a ball - most of us have played some sport or games even as children that involve catching a ball. Without even knowing it, you have been trained to respond to something automatically. If someone unexpectedly passed a basketball to you, you would probably react by catching it - this is because you have trained a reflex response through repetitious practice, and because it was fun, it didn't frighten you. When you "play" martial arts as a sport and make it fun, it will cause you to be more relaxed in a stressful situation and react automatically should the occasion arise where you need to protect yourself. If you threw ball at a baseball player - even in anger, he would react by catching it - in the same way, if someone throws a punch at a properly trained Martial Artist, the will automatically react with the appropriate response without emotional interference. At NYMAG, you will have fun learning real self defense and get in shape at the same time.
Invest in a Proven System that Really Works
Learn a proven system from Martial Artists, not Magicians. If you try out enough Martial Arts Schools, you'll start to see a pattern of instruction that looks more like a magic show than a martial arts demonstration. An instructor will set the stage, tell his assistant exactly what attack to perform on him and when to do it ... the assistant is told to throw a punch to the right side of his head and poof, the assistant leaps through the air cooperatively and is defeated. Amazing.
At NYMAG, we teach Martial Arts, not Magic. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a proven system with roots to real No Holds Barred Fighting that goes back to a time before the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Before the UFC, there was Vale Tudo, Real No Rules Fighting where Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners would showcase their skill against other styles. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners later brought this tradition with them to the United States and created "Open Challenges" to practitioners of other styles. The Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Challenge Matches of the early 1990's later became the Ultimate Fighting Championship where rules were added so that MMA would be accepted as a mainstream sport, but the basis of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu comes from a proven system that was tested in a No Rules arena versus other styles of Martial Arts. To this day, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners can demonstrate their ability to defeat attackers of various fighting styles without setting the stage with pre-determined attacks that come from cooperative attackers.
You need more than just punches, kicks and foul tactics.
Below you will see a video of a martial artist who never worked on Ground Fighting (Jiu-jitsu) - because "you wouldn't want to go there in a street fight" - against a Jiu-jitsu practitioner. You will also notice how he tries to replace actual skill and technique with foul tactics such as groin-grabbing. Anyone can bite, eye-gouge or grab a groin, including a person with real skills ... you need more than cheap shots to protect yourself. Ignoring a whole aspect of fighting will get you into trouble when it counts.
Does it work on the Street?
After reading the statistics above, you now know that most fights don't happen in some dark alley or on the "street". Some will completely avoid certain techniques because they claim it won't work on the street. This is the most common excuse for not doing groundfighting or Jiu-jitsu. They will just ignore it completely and say, "you don't want to be there on the street", breeding ignorance and putting their students at risk.
Below you will see a video of Jiu-jitsu being used on the pavement. After he wins the altercation by taking his opponent to the ground and choking him out using Jiu-jitsu effectively on the hard surface (regardless of the third party trying to stop it), the Jiu-jitsu practitioner (black top) gets up and walks away unharmed ... his opponent who doesn't know Jiu-jitsu isn't so lucky. *You may have to login to Youtube to see this video - it does contain actual street fighting footage from a security camera.
Be Smart, Do Your Homework and Look for Proof.
Martial Arts doesn't contain mystical secrets and isn't a magical power. It is a physical science that should be supported by experiment and proof. If it works, there will be evidence that it does. Watch out for unsubstantiated claims and things that work well in a Dojo vs opponents who were trained by that instructor or who may be cooperating.
Look at what Styles the large majority or Military and Law Enforcement Use.
Watch Early footage of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC 1 & 2) when there were almost no rules and time limits.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is an absolute requirement if you want to be a skilled and well-rounded Martial Artist.
Striking skills are important as well and in the world of striking arts, Muay Thai, like Jiu-jitsu has been proven to work against every other striking style out there; that's why we teach it.
There is nothing wrong with Dojo tradition, "art" and movies, but these things are not an accurate proving ground for a physical science such as Martial Arts in the real world.
The Styles and Techniques that we teach at NYMAG have been tested on the streets by Law Enforcement, in the worst combat situations by the Military and against trained opponents in MMA Competition. They are the choice of Experts and Professionals because they work in the real world.

Learn a Martial Art that You Can Actually Use in Real Life
Most Martial Arts Schools Are Teaching Techniques That Will Get You in Trouble or Even Sued if You Use Them and Leave You Wishing You Just Let A Bully Kick Your Butt!
You can beat a Bully ... But Can you beat his Lawyer? Learn Techniques that you can actually use in the REAL world.
Yes, we DO teaching striking techniques for Sport AND for Self Defense situations … WHEN APPROPRIATE – BUT most of the time, those techniques are NOT appropriate to use in REAL LIFE outside the ring! We teach you how to be better than your attacker ...
Aside from being the most effective and well rounded single martial art, Jiu-jitsu is one of the only styles that can be used in every day practical and realistic situations. Imagine training for years in a martial art and learning techniques that you can’t or won’t use when the occasion arises. Here are just a few examples …
At School
Did you know thatmost other Martial Arts Schools are teaching Children techniques that will get the SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL if they use? Regardless of who started the fight or who hit first, if your child strikes someone else, your child will suffer the same punishment as the kid who started it.
NYS schools have a very strict “No Hit” policy and will suspend your child for hitting, regardless of who started it. We will teach your child Jiu-jitsu techniques that can be used to stop a bully with less risk of being suspended, getting a mark on their permanent record and leaving you legally liable.
At Work
If someone becomes aggressive in the work place and you punch, eye gouge, bite or kick them in retaliation, chances are, you will be arrested, sued and lose your job. We teach simple, yet effective restraining techniques that can be used to stop (and even embarrass) a co-worker without looking like a Jerk, getting fired or sued.
Friends and Family
It isn’t OK to knock Uncle Bob out … even if he was drunk. We teach techniques that can be used to subdue someone without harming them so that you can control situations or break up fights between two people without causing anyone harm or starting a Family Feud! The whole point of breaking up a fight in the first place is to stop people from hurting one another!
Women
Studies show that 70% of violent attacks on women are committed by someone they know; this fact alone will make a woman far less likely to employ 99% of the moves shown in most Women’s self defense programs. Jiu-jitsu teaches women realistic ways to deal with attacks by using leverage, not brute force or unnatural violent attacks. The whole point of Jiu-jitsu is that it is an art designed to be used by smaller people against large opponents – a woman is more likely to break her hand on a large attacker than she is to knock him out.
Law Enforcement
If you are currently working in Law Enforcement, you are very familiar with “Use of Force” and know that striking excessively or using violent Martial Arts techniques can cost you your job and your future. Your job is to restrain, subdue and control in order to protect an innocent person or arrest a criminal - you cannot accomplish this effectively by using striking techniques. Jiu-jitsu is widely accepted by most Law Enforcement agencies as the most effective single style of martial arts and the most practical for safe application on the job.
We teach effective techniques that you can use responsibly in REAL LIFE.
